Northern Irish Census (NIC)
Measures describe a question asked to a participant during a survey or an item of information requested from a manager when they fill out a data return. For example, ‘Who do you live with?’ is a measure and the possible responses might be, mother, father, brother, sister etc.

Overview
Aims
To produce a comprehensive count of all people and households in Northern Ireland. Taken once every 10 years, so that government, health, education and other services can plan funding and provision. Participation is a legal requirement and the 2021 exercise was delivered as a predominantly online census to maximise response.

This is a statutory, full‑population enumeration of everyone usually resident in Northern Ireland on Census Day. It covers people in private households and in communal establishments (e.g., care homes, prisons, student halls, armed forces sites), with dedicated arrangements for groups such as students, Travellers, and HM Forces personnel. The 2021 census was digital‑first, with paper available on request. Every household was required by law (Census Act (NI) 1969) to respond.
