Children’s Social Care Statistics for Northern Ireland (CSCS-NI)
Measures describe a question asked to a participant during a survey or an item of information requested from a manager when they fill out a data return. For example, ‘Who do you live with?’ is a measure and the possible responses might be, mother, father, brother, sister etc.

Aims
This annual bulletin brings together official statistics on statutory children’s social care activity in Northern Ireland, collated from the five Health and Social Care (HSC) Trusts. It reports snapshots and annual flows for key service areas: children in need, the Child Protection Register, children in care (looked after), children’s residential homes, day‑care provision, foster carers, and young people subject to the Leaving Care Act. This informs service planning, performance monitoring and public accountability.

The statistics represent all children and young people who interact with statutory social care services in Northern Ireland during the year. This includes: children assessed as in need following referrals; those registered for child protection due to risk of significant harm; looked‑after children in foster, residential, or other placements; the settings and workforce that support them (e.g., children’s homes, day‑care providers, foster carers); and care leavers receiving support as they transition to adulthood. Data are compiled from all five HSC Trusts and presented as regional and Trust‑level snapshots and trends, reflecting operational demand, safeguarding activity, placements, and capacity across the system.
