Type of Housing

This is an optional data item when submitting Q1, Q2 and Q3 data. This data item becomes mandatory when submitting Q4 data and must be submitted.

If a client’s type of housing changed at any point during the financial year please record the type of housing at the end of the reporting period or the latest information available.

This data should be added to the quarter 4 file regardless of when the status of a client’s type of housing changed.

1 Mainstream
This is a private home (either owned/mortgaged or rented). This includes homes which have small adaptations e.g. handrails.

2 Supported
This includes:
• Special housing: premises that have been adapted to meet the need of people with particular needs, e.g. wheelchair access.
• Amenity housing: a group of premises with special modifications for particular needs but not supported by a warden.
• Sheltered housing: self-contained premises linked to a warden who provides specialist support to tenants.
Supported accommodation: A home where external support is put in place to help the tenants live as independently as possible.

3 Long Stay Care Home
Short-stay residents should be recorded the most
appropriate of the other code options.
This includes Registered Adult Care Homes and
Registered Child Care Accommodation.

4 Hospital or other medical establishment
To be used for long term patients only.
This includes independent hospitals, and NHS Facilities, including Specialist Rehabilitation Units.

5 Homeless
The person is without a permanent home.
This includes those within refuges, emergency/temporary accommodation, bed and breakfasts and those sleeping rough.

6 Penal Institutions
An institution which provides confinement as punishment. This may be a prison, a young offenders institution or secure psychiatric facility.

8 Other
Anything not covered in categories 1, 2, 3, 4,5 and 6.
This includes independent hospices and mobile
accommodation.

9 Not Known To be used when type of housing is not known.
